Vienna Teng at Le Poisson Rouge in NYC, 2009-04-10

Posted in new shows on April 11th, 2009 by keith from NY

Vienna Teng, a child of Silicon Valley who now makes her home in New York City, is a brilliant songwriter and performer who has been dazzling audiences for about 7 years now. Despite a fiercely loyal following, I think she is one of the the most underappreciated musical talents in the U.S. today. She has four exceptional albums to her credit and her shows are nothing less than spellbinding, whether performing alone on a piano or supported by the accomplished musicians who tour with her. She writes songs that are melodic and intelligent, often haunting and sometimes rhythmically complex. On stage she projects a confident but self-deprecating demeanor and often talks about the genesis of her songs before singing them. Her concert DVD Live at World Café Live (recorded in Philadelphia in January 2007) is one of my favorites.

This show was played to a packed house at Le Poisson Rouge club in Manhattan as part of a tour to support the recent release of Vienna’s Inland Territory CD. The matrix recording was made using the mixed outs from the soundboard and a pair of Milab DC-196 LD mics about 30 feet from the stage.
