Energy in the air on this particular night. We could feel it a we entered the Fox Theatre. The opening act, “These United States” gave us an opportunity to set the recording gear up, get our levels right, and grab a cocktail before Stockholm Syndrome came out to perform.

What we got was two solid sets and over 2 hours of music when it was said and done. The Show was strong from start to finish with a few covers thrown in to balance some great original music. Climax Blue’s Band “Couldn’t get it Right” opened the show and a nice heart felt tribute to Vic Chesnutt with the song “Flirted With You All My Life”

Once again I had the privilege of capturing the intimate and free-wheeling holiday shows of this six-man musical juggernaut at Club Passim in Cambridge. It’s truly a joy to watch a group of superlative musicians who are so comfortable with their abilities and each other as they perform a dazzling variety of original compositions, folk and country classics, and the odd cover of Prince and Captain Beefheart. Once in a while, the stars all line up for you. Two of your favorite artists decide to tour together, they book an intimate theater within driving distance that has a great sound system and acoustics, the musicians and engineers and venue management are all helpful in your efforts to capture the event, the audience is enthusiastic yet respectful, and the artists turn in amazing sets. Such was my experience on a rainy Saturday night in Old Saybrook, and I’m happy to be able to share exceptional performances by Vienna Teng and Over the Rhine here in their entirety.

Hey now, folks –
     It’s 1:30 AM Alaska time and we’re back at Selita & Brian’s place following a wonderful evening with Reeltime Travelers and Anchorage’s “Dancing Bears.”
     After spending the morning trying to figure out whether or not the Anchorage Folk Festival was just an elaborate inside-joke designed to lure us to Alaska (believe me, these folks do NOT believe in over-promoting their shows), we arrived at Romig Junior High School only to see Roy & Heidi climbing out of a van. Yeee-haw, RTT’s actually here! I admit, we’d been starting to wonder. Five minutes of instant soundcheck later and the dance was underway.
     Now lest you think this was your typical hippie flailing dance, we beg to correct. Think more along the lines of… well, LINES! It was a full-on contra dance, and these people were having a grand old time with their alleman-lefts and box-the-sets and swing-your-partner homes. The caller for the show was Jim Haack, and in some ways it was really his show with RTT playing some tasty and lengthy instrumental dance jams. By the way, tonight’s bass player was none other than Meredith McIntosh, so you called that one, Kurt! Meredith is the partner of John Hermann, who played bass on RTT’s 2nd cd — you own it, right??? — and she stayed up after last week’s Ida Red sets. (Kurt, we’ll check on taping status from last weekend but I’d say it’s a long shot. We had some serious hassles for even taping tonight — not from the band, of course! — but we won’t go into that melodrama in a teapot right now.) The band played for three hours of dancing, and we got a few RTT tunes as a teaser for tomorrow night’s appearance at Wendy O. Williams Hall… oops, I mean Williamson Hall. The Bear Creek Blues tonight was really fun and we got a couple of waltzes too. Our setlists are a bit of a shamble but we know they also played Too Young To Marry, Martha Campbell, Walkin’ In The Parlour, Old Molly Hare, Black-Eyed Susie, and The ‘Moose’ Walk (aka Deer Walk).
     I can’t even describe the energy expended by those dancers, they were unbelievable! At one point Chip was watching the dancers and he said, “I couldn’t do this with the state I’m usually in,” but I pointed out to him that we’d never been IN this state before. [chuckle...] I’ve never seen anything like that in my life — those dancers were having SOOOO much fun, and they also seemed VERY appreciative of the band’s energy and music. I’m sure LOTS of them will be out for the concert appearances tomorrow and Sunday.
     Well, it’s almost 2 AM and both Leigh & Chip are giving me crap for posting a freaking dissertation, but hopefully SOME-one out there is enjoying the posts of 3 Old Farts in Alaska. We’ll spill the beans as often as we can, but I must close by making public thanks to the amazing hospitality of Selita & Brian — man, Girdwood is GORGEOUS!!! More tomorrow! And glad you’re all along for the ride!

THE STORY:
The setting is a 100+ year old church in downtown Great Falls, MT where the congregation I serve lets me put on acoustic music concerts under the moniker of Stone Soup Productions.  This night was special because it featured our local hero Aaron Parrett, who teaches literature at University of Great Falls; Ivan Rosenberg, a musical gem & friend from Portland, OR; and our newest PDX transplant, Nann Alleman, of Flat Mountain Girls and Spigot fame.  The night was cold and the snow was flying by the time the show was over, but inside it was toasty and comfortable as we gathered for a great evening of music.  Oh, and Gordon Lightfoot was playing a nearly sold-out show at the GF Civic Center just 8 blocks away, but Aaron was convinced he’d win the cage-match between the two, and both he and Ivan even worked in a couple of the Canadian’s balladeer’s songs.  Great Falls is no musical mecca, but anyone with a lick of sense, some good friends, and a gracious venue can make live music happen on a dime, and I strongly encourage everyone to act on the truth that Live Music Is Better!  And yes, bumperstickers should be issued.
